Favourite Studio images.

Both of these photos made me speechless when I took them. I really love them! The shadowing is beautiful and very flattering. Cant thank these two models enough for being so fabulous!

Setting for both were f/22 1/125 ISO100

Chiaroscuro lighting Practitioners.

Paolo Roversi

Born 1947. Paolo's passion for photography built up when he was on a family trip in spain, when he got home he set up a dark room and begun developing photos! in 1970 Paolo opened his own portrait studio where he began photographing celebrities and their families. Step by step Paolo reached closer and closer to the fashion industry. In 1974 Laurence packman took Paolo on as an assistant photographer. Laurence taught Paolo everything he needed to know to become a professional photographer!

Here you can see the loop lighting. Really love the blue- green tint in her hair. Very intense photograph because of her pose.

Here he has used Split lighting because you can only see one half of her face. Really love the intensity of the shadows. The lighting actually looks like a sunday beam through a window or something.

Richard Misrach

Born 1949. Richard is an american photographer who is identified for introducing colour to fine art photography. Richard uses large format cameras. Wall street journal calls Richard the most 'interesting and original photographer of his generation.'
Richard is known to document man made destructions, he does this by putting a whole series of photographs together to show the change which i find really interesting.
In both photographs below you can tell he has photographed at night using a speed light and another light to highlight cactuses and other interesting things in the background.
I really love the bottom photo because you can see the light from the moon. He would have had to have used a slow shutter speed.

Studio Gels- Practitioners.

Ryan McGinley

Born October 17, 1977.
Ryan is an American photographer living in New York who began taking photographs in 1998. Ryan is one of the youngest photographers to have his own show at the Whitney Museum of American art. In 2003 Ryan was named photographer of the year by American photo magazine.

In this photograph i believe Ryan has put coloured gels over his lens to give that Orange and red ombre affect, this is because the whole photo itself has that affect its not made by lights. This photograph gives me a summer feel because its warm and obviously at the beach.

I really love what he has done in these two photographs and how he has incorporated smoke! Such an amazing effect and i will certainly try this out. Contrast between warm and cool is really lovely. Gives me a sense of freedom. Bit like hippies dancing around the fire back in the flower power days.

Tyler Sheilds

Born April 29, 1982. Tyler is an American photographer and professional skater. I chose Tyler because he is one of my favourite Photographers. And he just so happened to use studio gels in his photo series 'Submerged' and this is also one of my favourite photo series.

Love this photo so much, The purple lights up the white gown so beautifully. And the fact that she is underwater is just 10  times more stunning. He has captured the motion perfectly. you can see the lighting beaming from above her which is really quite beautiful.

Another awesome shot! You can actually see where the lights are coming from which is really quite cool because its like they are dancing on a stage. Even thought you can clearly see they are under water. I really like the green patterns of the water ripples on the floor of the pool. Such a stunning image.

Week 7- Chiaroscuro- Loop, Split, Rembrant

Split

split lighting is when the light is directly beside the model which only lights up half of the model. I really like the dramatic effect this lighting gives.  For this to work thoroughly we had to turn off all lights and use manual focus to focus on model.
f/8  1/125   ISO100

Loop

This lighting technique is when the light is moved more to the front of the model so it creates a dark loop like shadow from the models nose. This lighting effect is perfect for average, oval shaped faces.
As you can see in the photos below the loop was very successful. The shadowing in Tatiana's portrait is very flattering!
f/9   1/125   ISO100

Rembrant

Rembrant is when there is a triangle formed under the eye. This reminds me of a clowns face! To do this the light needs to be moved further to the front of the model but not as far as you would for the loop effect but just far enough where the light hits the models cheek on the opposite side.
Absolutely love the photo of karen! Looks so good. Was a challenge to create this affect.

Self Directed- Baby Damon

Damon

I found this photoshoot so fun and a good challenge. Damon is 9 months old so he doesn't yet understand about keeping still and smiling when asked which then resulted in his mother jumping around like a crazy lady behind me. I had the reflector on hand just incase the shadows were too harsh but luckily it was an over cast day so the lighting was stunning. Damon was a really placid baby so it was a breeze of a photo shoot until it started raining!

Love the off centre composition. His right eye is the dominating eye because it is centred.

The antlers frame him, bit of a shame he wasn't sitting directly in the middle but thats my fault because i didn't prop him up properly on the pillow. Love the look of the fence as a back drop.

Love the focus! and the colours! Such a perfect smile. Perfect composition because his left eye is the dominating eye!

Self Directed Studio time.

Head shots-Brooke

I was lucky enough to get asked to photograph this very very photogenic girl. These photographs are head shots for when she goes over to LA for an acting school. I used a three point lighting setup for this shoot to get the best and most flattering lighting for her. I had to photograph only the top half of her. Tatiana and i made use of a fan to blow her hair which was a really amazing and stunning affect. I feel really happy with these shots.
The settings I used for this shoot is 'f/10   1/125   ISO100'

Yoga- Tatiana

Absolutely love the moody effect the lighting gave each photo. Here we used a snoot spotlight to create harsh shadows and highlights. In some photos the shadows make it look like Tatiana is floating which is really cool.
Settings used in this shoot is 'F/9  1/125  ISO100'

Week 6- practitioners Studio lighting.

Annie Leibovitz

Born October 2, 1949.
Annie is known as one of the world's best portrait photographer. Like many photographers she started out by having a passion for painting but when she went to San Francisco Art institute she soon found her path and developed her passion for photography. Annie started working with Rolling stone magazine and then at just 23 years of age held the title of Chief photographer and she was for the next 10 years. Annie has a way of photographing peoples personalities by capturing every little detail of them, Annie uses bold colours as well as bold poses.

I think this photograph is absolutely stunning, the light captures her eyes and hair beautifully and her skin looks flawless. In this photograph i can imagine Annie used two lights, one directly in front of model and one behind shining on wall. There are not any strong shadows on her face and if you look into her eyes you can see a light right in front which gives that spotlight affect and highlights her hair

The colours are absolutely stunning, Anne Hathaway looks very elegant in this portrait. I think Annie has used one light on the left of the model highlighting Hathaway because there is quite a bit of shadow on the right side of Hathaway but Annie has used a light on the right to brighten up the backdrop to show difference between Hathaway and the backdrop.

Peter Coulson

Peter is an Australian photographer. Peter specializes in Fashion, beauty and fetish photography. He incorporates many different styles into his photographs as well as the latest fashion trends. His photographs make his audience want more. There is something about the way he gets his models to pose, its mysterious and sexy. The way he uses lighting to hide and highlight certain parts of the females body it is very interesting.

I love how only one half of this models body is lit. Gives a sense of mystery to the portrait.  For this Peter would have used only one light on the right of the model.

Such a strong yet very seductive image. I love how he has set up the lighting to show the detail of the backdrop as well as the model. I feel he would of had to have used three point lighting. I like how her hair and Bum have been highlighted and the clash of colour between her white body and black tights. It all pulls together very nicely.

Week 7- Studio lighting gels.

Studio Gels

Had so much fun with this shoot! Caryline you were a fabulous model.
Here is one of the photos we tried to emulate. To do this we Set up a light on the left with a Reddish- pink gel and then set up a light with a blue gel on the right of the model. This created really beautiful colours because blue and red make purple so the backdrop was half purple and half pink which was really beautiful!

Perfect timing! Im really loving the motion in each and everyone of these photo's. I really like how half of her body is blue and the other half is pink. Really cool affect.

f/11  1/125  ISO100

This photograph is more like the photograph that we tried to emulate! I think this is a really successful shot. For some strange reason this photo and the photo below are quite brighter  which is odd because on my laptop in bridge they look good but a soon as I upload them they look quite bright.

f/11  1/125  ISO100

As soon as i took this photo I noticed the dark lines of shadows on her neck which looks really cool because half of her face has lines across it and then the other half has nothing except one symmetrical line just under her eyes. Awesome hair flick!

I just thought this photograph looked stunning in BW. Amazing shadows and highlights.

Self Directed Models.

Modeling in Rapanui and Te Kawau bay.

So over our semester break I went home and decided to photograph my two close friends for a bit of fun. Im really happy with the outcome of the photos. I tried going for a vogue look (No Smiles and interesting clothes) Ive always wanted to photograph two models ever since I saw the photographs of Kendall Jenner and Clara Delevingne and other vogue photoshoots like the photos below.

Here is my emulation of the photographs above. Tayla is the girl with blonde hair and Vaida with the brown hair. These two had never met until this photo shoot so it was really interesting to see them warm up to each other and create a relationship in the images.

Portraits

Here is my  favourite portraits from this shoot. I love the style and I feel I chose the right clothing for the shoot. I feel the theme 'Vogue' runs right through all these photos. I love the composition go the models, some slightly off centre and others centred. in the bottom right photograph i realised that the green grass and Vaida's reddish-purple night gown contrast's beautifully!

Week 6 Digital Tech.

Photomerge.

Here I took 5 photo's and merged them together on photoshop to make a panorama. Because I didn't take the photo's straight I had to crop the picture down. When I took these photos I had to make sure that the photos were overlapping and keep the camera in the same height for every photo.

Retouching

So you can see the obvious difference between these photos. I really love how well the retouching has turned out. My favourite was enhancing the eye colour by using the B&W paint brush. Makes a huge difference. I also loved learning about the camera raw filter where you can have your photo opened in photoshop but still be able to flick back to camera raw for some extra retouching. In photoshop i used the spot healing brush to take away blemishes and fly away hair. As you can see in the first image her teeth have a yellow stain to them so i highlighted her teeth and played with the yellow slider to take down the yellow.

Before
After

Week 5- Colour and focal length.

Focal point.

So in the first photo you can see that Tracy's face is a little distorted, this is because I did not zoom and just stood close up to her. But when i stood back and zoomed in on her the photo turned out 10 times better. Her nose isn't looking as big. Its almost like a fish eye effect has been put on the first photo.

In these three photos I stood back from the model and zoomed up. Nothing in the photo changes except the focal length. If i was to stand back take a photo then take 5 steps closer and take another photograph the whole photograph would change each time, because i'm the one moving and id be fitting more into the image because i'm not zooming in.

Colour

Heres the difference between cool and warm colours. Warm yellow has given Tracys hair a lighter shade of brown whereas the blue has made her hair dark. Interestingly enough even though Tracy is up against a cool background her face looks relatively orange. Possibly because of sunlight.
